Treasure Hunt... KL - Kuantan (10-11 Sept 2005)

My second time participating in a treasure hunt. Same team members as last year. Last year our team name was "fast and curious"... so this year it's "fast and curious 2". How "original"

Last year we came third (not bad for a first timer, huh?)... so we though, maybe it'll be tough to better that. But we DID!! Got second this time round... losing by 1 point. We actually had all our answers and treasures correct, but lost points on the challenge (blowpipe & lastik). Oh well... we did try our best

This year the after-race dinner had "From the movies" theme... and we went all out! Did my own costume (my team members malas and just rented). We came 2nd too.. the team that won did a short sketch too.. so they won on effort. It was a lot of fun!! As we entered the ballroom we received an applause and as soon as we sat down, there were ppl taking our photos. Felt like a celebrity pulak, hehe.
The dinner shows were excellent and we had some impromtu rock bands, dancing zorro and many more. It was a thrilling night.

The next day we drove to Beserah on the way back... stopped at a small fishing village. The beach was so beautiful.

Our excellent driver drove us home in record time (I won't say how fast in case there are any traffic police reading this...) but it was FAST!! When we reached KL, we were famished and straight went for a very late lunch at Ayam Kampung Stadium Cheras.

Needless to say, when we got back to office Monday morning, everyone had heard about our costumes...

Such a terrific weekend...

I finally made a trip to Thailand this year (August 2005)... visited Chiang Mai and Bangkok. Went there with Mama... just us ladies on a shopping spree, hehe.

We went to Chiang Mai first (which on hindsight was a good thing, or otherwise we would have finished all our moolahs in Bangkok ). First night we stayed at Chiang Mai Plaza.. which is just a short walk to the famous Chiang Mai night market. Got a good deal thru Asiarooms... the room was big and clean with nice decor around the hotel. After that we stayed at Sheraton Chiang Mai, which was further away from the city centre (I was attending a seminar there).
We had an excellent driver, Kamphan (thru Sargeant Kai), who took us around the city. We visited Doi Suthep, San Khamphaeng Road (handicraft district) and many more (I'm regretting not jotting down the names). Had a fabulous time shopping for thai silk, handicrafts and jewellery!! Chiang Mai ppl are very artistic and creative. Oh.. I also had this wonderful tomyam soup.. the best I've ever had.. in a small Muslim shop. Communication was a bit of a problem when Kamphan was not around.. but we managed.
One night, I had dinner at this fabulous restaurant which was located within the Four Seasons resort. Too bad it was already dark... wanted to check out the surroundings as well bcoz the website photos were just breathtaking. The food there was also excellent and we were entertained by traditional musicians.

After a few days in Chiang Mai, we headed to Bangkok. Stayed at Indra Regent hotel which was located in the garments warehouse district... which was very convenient for Mama Bangkok was much, much, much more busier than Chiang Mai. It's a big city with elevated highways cutting through the city.. which can be quite a sore sight. In Bangkok, we did the obligatory.. shopping, Grand Palace, Wat Arun, Vinamnek Palace, Chao Phraya river boat, Jim Thomson's house, Chatuchak Market... I even managed to squeeze in the National Museum. Took a ride on the tuk-tuk... not something for someone with asthma problems. Mama didn't like it either because it was quite difficult for her to get on and off. So we took mostly taxis.. but I did a bit of an adventure ride on my own on the public bus and light rail.
Again... the desserts in Bangkok we plentiful and interesting. Had wonderful, colourful stuff.. which helped cool us off from the heat. We bought so many things.. bags were filled to the max. Fortunately the hotel had weighing scales to help make sure that we didn't go overweight.

Bangkok is definitely a shoppers' heaven, especially for clothes, shoes, handbags.. unfortunately they don't have XL sizes nor size 10 shoes. But I personally prefer Chiang Mai for it's culture and artistic highlights. The ppl there were friendlier, things (slightly) cheaper and less frenzied.

Maybe one day I'll do a return visit...

I've been to other places around the world, but have never set foot in Sabah or Sarawak. So, finally when AirAsia had one of their crazy deals, booked a flight with Mama & Papa.. only paid RM120 (including tax) for the return airfare!! But the downside was that we had to take VERY EARLY flights... 7am from KL and 6.45am from KK. Oh well... I could always sleep on the plane

We were there for 4 full days. Stayed at Nexus Karambunai, Pine Resort (in Kundasang) and Sutera Harbour. I had a room to myself and a large big king-sized bed to roll around Rented a car and drove around KK town and up the mountains to Kinabalu Park, Ranau... all the way to Poring.

The scenery was just breathtaking! I absolutely loved the drive to the mountains... and couldn't stop snapping photos. Another thing I really enjoyed were the BBQ seafood stalls at the night market.. just next to the handicraft market. YUMMY!! Some of the fish I've never seen in my life! One thing that really took me by surprise were the food portions... it was BIG! We could have easily shared a plate of nasi goreng between the 3 of us.

One thing I missed out was going to the islands It was our final day in KK and after toiling over which island to visit our plans were dashed. Turned out that the sea condition was too rough... a residual effect from a typhoon that hit the Philippines. Even the locals were taken by surprise... they've never seen waves that big coupled with tide at noon. Lucky thing we didn't take an early morning boat or otherwise we would have been marooned at one of the islands

One thing for sure... I'll definitely make another trip to KK. And next time, the islands will be first on my itinerary...
